GOALS:

My Goal: From now until Thanksgiving, I will run a total of 600 miles or more and raise money for the San Francisco-Marin food bank in the process.

About Me:

I’m Luca Avila, a sophomore at Stuart Hall High School and I run cross-country. Being a runner makes me recognize the importance of nutrition and good food. This summer I wanted to create a fundraiser that combines my love for running with my goal to help those without access to fresh food.

My reason for doing this:

This year I began volunteering at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank with my grandma and I’ve realized how serious the hunger crisis is in the Bay Area. After talking with the people that work at the food bank, I learned that food insecurity in the Bay Area has doubled and tripled in some places after the pandemic. I see how healthy food can make a positive impact and I want to give more people access to it. This project helps the San Francisco-Marin food bank donate more food and benefits those in need.

Challenge Timeline:

My start date was July 1st and my end date is Thanksgiving. I’ll be posting video updates on this website every 100 miles.

How I’m tracking my progress:

Every run I go on will be recorded on Strava. On Strava I made a running club where I can post my runs and the total mileage I’ve run. To see these runs and join my Strava club, click the button below.

I will also send weekly updates to anyone who has signed up with their email. To sign up, enter your email in the area at the bottom of this page and click sign up.

Lastly, I’ll post weekly updates on this website. To find these, click the text titled “Progress” in the top right corner.

How I’ll collect money from sponsorships:

I have set up a GoFundMe fundraiser. This fundraiser is an online area where you can send donations. Every donation is important because for every $1 donated, the food bank will give away 2 meals. Donations of all sizes will really benefit the foodbank and those that rely on it. To go to the fundraiser, click the button below.
